We have probably all heard the saying 'time heals all wounds.' Or we have been reminded how time ages wines and cheeses as we get older as if this will make aging in a society where youth is valued more than wisdom somehow less painful. What about 'time waits for no man?' Hmm.
I have said before and will say again, I love getting older. If we allow it, wisdom can come with age. If we choose to live, surrounded with wise, generous hearted people, we can grow wiser. Yet it takes time.
I have always chosen a path that was not the easiest. I am not sure why. I just have. If there is a problem, I want to fix it. If someone needs something, I want to help them find it. If people need compassion, I have it in abundance for them.
I have also admired people who have done small things that make a huge difference in the world around them. These small things gradually became big things. Their small ripple of impact became a tidal wave. This too took time.
Change takes time. People take time. Love takes time. Grace takes time. Mercy takes time. Compassion takes time. Forgiveness takes a LOT of time. As does healing. We need to be patient and allow these things to grow in us. We must also be careful to not sit back too much and just assume they will appear.
For years I struggled with waiting to be able to make a big impact on the world around me. I saw some big problems around me and I wanted to help make them better. I wanted life to be better for those I cared so deeply about. People living in poverty. People living with illness. People living alone and neglected. People who had made bad choices but needed help to start making better ones. Yet I have had to wait.
It has been difficult at times. Yet I soon realised there was much ground work to be done to lay a proper foundation for any future work. The people I have admired grew into their roles. Life is not always about our agenda. It is often about being a part of a bigger picture and understanding our place in it. We need to take time to listen and observe before forging ahead with our plans. If I truly want to help others, I need to fully understand the situations they are in or have come from.
So I have spent years listening, learning, speaking when given the opportunity, being open to others and have found the start of (maybe) my biggest calling yet. It has taken a while to get here and I am ok with that. I have learned that some things are really worth the time and waiting invested.
When I lived in Ireland, tea was central to society. When I would visit a home and their response was to 'put the kettle on' I knew I was expected to stay for a while. Tea takes time to steep. It takes time to drink. And whilst enjoying it, friendships are made. Lives are lived. People are loved.
While I have a few more things to put into place before starting new things, I am at peace knowing all will happen at just the right time.
